Botanical Name: Sclerocarya birrea is a tree commonly known as the marula and King of African trees.

Aromatic Description: Marula oil, derived from the kernels of the Sclerocarya birrea tree, is prized for its nourishing, lightweight, and fast-absorbing qualities. It has a subtle, pleasant, nutty aroma with faint earthy undertones, making it an unobtrusive yet comforting addition to skincare and ritual blends. Symbolically, marula oil represents fertility, resilience, and abundance. It reflects the hardy marula tree’s ability to thrive in harsh environments and its revered status in many African cultures as a source of ancestral wisdom and life-giving nourishment.

This oil is closely associated with the Solar Plexus and Heart Chakras. It supports confidence and emotional resilience while gently opening the heart to nurturing and compassion. Chemically, marula oil is rich in oleic acid (omega-9), deeply moisturizing and excellent for restoring skin softness and elasticity. It also contains linoleic acid (omega-6), palmitic and stearic acids, natural vitamin E (tocopherols), and antioxidant flavonoids, all contributing to its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and skin-protective properties.

In skincare, marula oil is ideal for dry, sensitive, mature, or acne-prone skin because it moisturizes without clogging pores. Its antioxidant content helps diminish fine lines and protects against environmental damage. It calms inflammation and redness, improves skin tone and elasticity, and benefits hair and scalp health, taming frizz and nourishing dryness. Emotionally, marula oil provides grounding comfort, eases stress and tension, and helps balance emotions during overwhelm or fatigue. Spiritually, it honours ancestral connections and earth energies, seals energy fields after ritual work, and supports meditation by fostering inner strength and centeredness.

Marula oil blends beautifully with essential oils such as frankincense, lavender, geranium, and carrot seed for skincare; ylang-ylang, bergamot, and Roman chamomile for emotional wellness; and sandalwood, myrrh, and clary sage for spiritual practices. It is extracted through a cold-pressed process that preserves its delicate nutrients and antioxidants, often sourced ethically from women’s cooperatives in Southern Africa. The oil has a silky, non-greasy texture, absorbs quickly, and maintains a stable shelf life of about 18 to 24 months when stored properly.
