Botanical Name: Narcissus poeticus is also known as Daffodil, Nargis, and Pinkster lily. The typical Daffodil blooms in early spring and modern large-flowered daffodils are the most popular.

Aromatic Description: Narcissus Essential Oil is derived from the flowers of the Narcissus plant, also known as Daffodil or paper white. Narcissus essential oil, often available as an absolute due to its delicate floral source, is derived from the flowers of Narcissus poeticus or occasionally other species such as Narcissus tazetta. This oil is highly valued in perfumery and emotional aromatherapy for its complex, intoxicating scent and rare, labour-intensive production process. Its aroma is floral, rich, and heady, with green and slightly spicy undertones layered with sweet, powdery, and narcotic nuances. The scent is almost hypnotic, making it a favourite in high-end fragrance compositions and emotional wellness practices. It functions primarily as a middle-to-base note in aromatic blending, with strong tenacity and lingering depth.

Symbolically, Narcissus speaks to themes of self-reflection, inner truth, and renewal. Rooted in Greek mythology, it reflects the journey of turning inward to discover self-love and clarity. Energetically, it resonates most strongly with the Heart Chakra, which helps release grief and open to compassion, and the Third Eye Chakra, which enhances intuition and deep meditative states. For this reason, its fragrance is often used in spiritual rituals and dreamwork.

Chemically, Narcissus oil is complex and potent. While compositions may vary by species and origin, typical constituents include benzyl acetate, which contributes to its sweet, floral character; indole, responsible for its animalic and narcotic undertones; linalool, which adds a calming, floral touch; phenethyl alcohol for a fresh, rosy aroma; eugenol with a spicy clove-like nuance; and methyl benzoate, which adds a balsamic, fruity facet. Due to its strength, only trace amounts are used in blending, and it is best handled with precision and care.

In aromatherapy, narcissus essential oil is used less for physical therapeutic benefits and more for emotional and spiritual applications. It is deeply calming and grounding, making it an ideal companion for meditation, grief work, and emotional release. Narcissus helps process heartbreak, trauma, and inner turmoil by gently easing the nervous system and lifting heavy emotional states. It is also renowned for its sensual and aphrodisiac qualities, encouraging romantic and intimate connection when used mindfully. The oil’s profound effect on the psyche has led to its use in spiritual rituals and emotional transformation practices, supporting introspection, dreamwork, and heart opening.

Narcissus essential oil is commonly used in perfumery, especially in luxury and artisan formulations. It lends depth and elegance to floral, oriental, and chypre perfumes, often blending harmoniously with other opulent florals like jasmine, rose, tuberose, and ylang-ylang. It also pairs beautifully with woody oils such as sandalwood, vetiver, and cedarwood and resins like frankincense and labdanum. Bright citrus notes like bergamot or mandarin in lighter blends can offset it. Because of its strong presence, Narcissus should be used sparingly—typically, one drop can have a pronounced impact on a blend.
