Botanical Name: Rosa Canina or Rosa Moschata Family of Rosaceae

Aromatic Description: Rosehip oil is reported to have been used since the times of the Ancient Egyptians, prized for its moisturizing properties. Rosehip Oil, derived from the seeds of the Rosa canina, Rosa rubiginosa, or Rosa moschata species, is a prized botanical oil renowned for its regenerative and healing properties. Unlike rose essential oil, which is extracted from the petals, rosehip oil is obtained from the fruit and seeds of the rose plant and has a mild, earthy, and slightly nutty aroma. It lacks the floral intensity typically associated with roses, making it suitable for sensitive users and blending without overpowering other scents. This gentle oil is symbolic, often representing healing, renewal, and transformation. Its very origin—from the fruit left behind after a rose has bloomed and faded—embodies the energy of rebirth and resilience, making it a powerful ally in emotional and spiritual work, especially during transition or self-discovery.

Rosehip oil is closely associated with the Heart Chakra (Anahata), where it facilitates emotional healing, self-love, and compassion. It also resonates with the Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura), supporting self-worth and personal empowerment through inner nourishment. In energetic work, it is a balm to the spirit, soothing the wounds of grief, heartbreak, and emotional fatigue.

Chemically, rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids—particularly linoleic acid (~44%), alpha-linolenic acid (~34%), and oleic acid (~14%)—which deeply nourish the skin and restore barrier function. It also contains vitamins A (as trans-retinoic acid), C, and E, as well as beta-carotene and lycopene, potent antioxidants that combat oxidative stress and promote skin regeneration. These constituents make rosehip oil one of the most effective natural options for restoring damaged skin, reducing scarring, and diminishing the visible signs of ageing.

Rosehip oil is celebrated for supporting cell regeneration and collagen production in skincare, thanks to its naturally occurring vitamin A. It helps fade scars, stretch marks, and discolouration and is often recommended for use after surgeries or to reduce the appearance of acne scarring. It’s also highly effective at hydrating the skin without clogging pores, making it ideal for dry, sensitive, or even acne-prone skin. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties make it soothing for conditions like eczema, rosacea, and dermatitis, while its vitamin C content helps brighten the skin and even out hyperpigmentation.

On an emotional level, rosehip oil offers gentle comfort and reassurance. It carries an energy of restoration and softness, encouraging the release of emotional pain and embracing self-compassion. Used in aromatherapy blends, it can provide grounding support for those experiencing emotional depletion or burnout, and it is often chosen during therapy or healing work to facilitate emotional clarity and the gentle processing of past trauma. In spiritual contexts, rosehip oil is used to anoint the heart or solar plexus before meditation or energy healing sessions. It is a favourite for rituals of transformation, particularly those involving grief, forgiveness, or self-renewal. It may be added to ritual baths, used as an anointing oil, or blended with other spiritually attuned oils to deepen one’s inner work.

Rosehip oil makes an excellent carrier for essential oils in custom blends. For anti-ageing and skin rejuvenation, it pairs beautifully with frankincense and lavender. For scar healing and emotional comfort, blends with helichrysum and rose are highly effective. Chamomile and tea trees enhance their calming and antimicrobial properties when targeting acne or inflammation. For emotional well-being, blends with bergamot and geranium uplift the mood, while sandalwood and neroli promote deep emotional release. Spiritually, rosehip can be combined with myrrh and rose for ritual use or with clary sage and jasmine for enhancing intuition and feminine energy.

The most common extraction method for rosehip oil is cold-pressing, which preserves the integrity of its delicate vitamins and fatty acids. High-quality oils are extracted from the seeds with minimal heat and stored in dark glass bottles to prevent oxidation. Some premium preparations use CO₂ extraction, a solvent-free method that yields a potent and stable oil with enhanced nutrient retention. Occasionally, rosehip is infused into other carrier oils, though these preparations are less concentrated and more suitable for gentle topical blends.

Due to its high content of unsaturated fatty acids, rosehip oil is prone to oxidation and should be stored away from heat and light, preferably in the refrigerator. To maintain its therapeutic potency, it is recommended to use it within 6 to 12 months of opening. With its profound healing benefits for skin and spirit, rosehip oil remains a revered staple in holistic skincare, emotional healing rituals, and heart-centred spiritual practices.
